Milton's Rich History

The town of Milton grew from a small settlement established by Jasper Martin along Sixteen Mile Creek, who immigrated to the country from England in 1818. The Crown granted him 100 acres of land, where he constructed a grist mill. Other settlers arrived and built homes around the mill, and the area began to be known as Mill Town. In 1857, Milton was incorporated as a town, after being chosen as county seat for Halton. Due to urban sprawl, its population expanded significantly toward the end of the twentieth century and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Its rural beginnings and rich history continue to be celebrated today and are preserved in the historic downtown area and several museums and heritage sites around town.
